Best Women Bikes

Are you looking for the best women’s bikes in 2022? Check out our favorite models in different categories, including hybrid, road, mountain, and cruiser bicycles.

Before we show you our top choices, we should make one thing clear: as a woman, you can ride any bike that you like and that you feel good riding.

Bicycles with women-specific geometry might benefit some women, but all women are not limited to these models exclusively.

At Bicycle Guider, we don’t believe in terms such as ‘men’s bicycles’ and ‘women’s bicycles.’ We believe that all bicycles are unisex and that they can fit both genders equally well, depending on individual physical characteristics and preferences.

For that reason, our list consists of women-specific models and unisex models that offer the best bang for the buck in each category.

You can check out our list of the 15 best women’s bikes below, divided into different categories – Hybrid / Road / Mountain / Cruiser.

Best Hybrid Bikes for Women

Women's hybrid bikes

Hybrid bikes are versatile bicycles that can be used for commuting, training, or just casual riding. They are fast, but have a comfortable geometry and are very stable and easy to control.

They combine the best from two worlds – road bikes and mountain bikes.

These bicycles in most cases have 700c wheels, aluminum frames, some expensive models are full-carbon or have a carbon fork, and they can have front suspension or be completely rigid.

There are lots of reliable female models for sale, so below we’ll show you the best hybrid bikes for women in our opinion.

Co-op Cycles CTY 1.2

Quality Components and Hydraulic Discs

Co-op Cycles CTY 1.2Full Overview of the Co-op Cycles CTY Series

Co-op Cycles CTY 1.2 is one of the best women’s hybrid bikes for sale on this list. It is perfect for city commuters because it comes with plenty of eyelets for fenders, racks, water bottle cages, and the like.

It’s ready to be ridden even when the rain is pouring outside, and you can easily fit it with panniers to carry groceries or personal things. It comes in one color, a very sleek and smooth pirate black.

Co-op Cycles CTY 1.2 is an affordable unisex hybrid bike that offers some surprisingly good features such as hydraulic disc brakes and multi-surface tires!

CTY 1.2 is a flat-bar hybrid bike, which means that it excels when you take it both on gravel and paved roads. The frame and the fork are fully built from aluminum, so the bike is durable and comfortable which is important if you use it to commute every day. If you use it for gravel adventures, you’ll find the frame to be stable and the geometry to support your pedaling.

For around $1,000, you’ll get Shimano Acera/Alivio front and rear derailleurs, with 27 speeds in total. The versatile 48/36/26T crankset and an 11-34T cassette will provide you with all the range you need for steep climbs.

Another thing that puts CTY 1.2 among the best hybrid bikes for women is the hydraulic disc brakes. They provide the best stopping power and are much easier to maintain compared to traditional rim brakes.

Buy If: If you need a bike that you can ride in all conditions and finish errands around the city, while not worrying too much about maintenance, you’ll be happy with Co-op Cycles CTY 1.2.

Schwinn Vantage

Best for All-Terrain Riding

Schwinn Vantage

First of all, Schwinn Vantage is one of the most beautiful unisex road bikes that we’ve seen so far at this price point.

The simple and crisp black or grey paint job with blue details is a real head-turner wherever you go. However, component-wise, it is a great choice for men and women as well.

It’s perfect for rougher terrain due to wider 35c tires with light treads, which will ride on gravel with no problems. The Vantage is an entry-level bike, so it’s perfect for those who want to start cycling for the first time.

What sets this model apart from other unisex bikes are Shimano road bike derailleurs. In this case, that is Shimano Sora groupset, which is usually put on mid-range bikes that are built to go fast and go for long.

The drop handlebars offer several different hand positions, so your palms and shoulders will not get tired after long training.

Schwinn Vantage is the ideal solution if you easily get bored from riding on perfectly smooth roads and want to take a detour on an off-road route.

One thing that could be better on this model is the wheels. They’re made from aluminum, but some riders report that they are heavier than ideal. On the other hand, the TRP Spyre C mechanical disc brakes are top-notch.

Other than that, the bike is light because of the aluminum frame and fork, and it has a comfortable saddle, so it will feel great to ride.

Buy if: you’re on the lookout for the best men’s and women’s bikes to upgrade from your low-end hybrid and ride on gravel and rougher terrain, don’t look past Schwinn Vantage!

Women’s Mountain Bikes

Best Women's Mountain Bikes

Ladies’ mountain bikes come in different shapes and sizes. When talking about wheels, they are available in 26”, 27.5”, and 29” sizes. However, the best women’s mountain bikes, in our opinion, are those with 27.5” wheels. They ensure a stable and comfortable ride and ensure a good standover clearance.

Apart from that, you can choose between hardtail women’s bicycles and full-suspension models. Hardtail bikes have just the front suspension, whereas full-suspension bikes have rear suspension as well.

You should also be mindful of brakes and gears when looking at women’s mountain bikes. Mechanical disc brakes use a cable system much like V brakes. Hydraulic brakes use oil to transfer force from the lever to the calipers. Both can be good, but hydraulic brakes usually have a much better-stopping power.

When it comes to gears, this is something you do not have to worry about. All women’s mountain bikes today have enough gears.

Women can ride men’s mountain bikes as well, you only need to change the saddle and perhaps put a shorter stem, and you’re ready to go!

Let’s take a look at the best woman’s mountain bikes for sale!

Buying Guide

Ladies Bikes vs. Men Bikes

Men vs Women bikesAt first sight, a lot of people would not spot any differences between women’s and men’s bicycles. In reality, women’s bicycles are not that different from men’s.

The main differences can be seen in stem length and top tube length, as well as in the saddle. On bikes designed to fit a woman’s body, the stem length and top tube length is shorter. That is to compensate for the fact that women usually have shorter arms than men.

Women’s and men’s saddles usually differ in width and length. Women typically have a wider pelvis than men, so women’s saddles are short and wide, while men’s saddles are long and narrow.

Other than that, the structure of the two frames can be different as well. Some ladies’ bikes have a top tube that is slanted down towards the pedals (Step-Thru Frames), but this does not affect the performance of a bike too much.

How Much Should I Spend on a Bike?

This is a question that we get often, but it is a very difficult one to answer.

The amount you should spend on a bicycle depends on the components you want to get and the reasons why you’re buying a bike in the first place. Generally, the more money you spend, the more reliability and quality you’ll get. Make sure that all of the important components are made either by SRAM or by Shimano. How Much should I pay for my bike

> Women’s Cruiser Bikes

The best women’s cruiser bikes can be bought for around $350. There is no need to pay much more than that since these bikes are usually used for casual rides in the park and commutes. Sure, if you want to get better components, feel free to raise your limit to $500.

When it comes to hybrid, mountain, and road bikes, the answer is a bit more complex.

> Women’s Beginner Bikes Prices

If you are a beginner or you want to buy a bicycle for occasional rides or casual weekend rides, you shouldn’t spend more than $500. Best beginner women’s bikes can be found for this price.

> Women’s Training Bikes Prices

If you’re planning to use your future bike to get fit or stay fit and frequently use it for training, aim to spend a minimum of $750. You’ll get decent components at that price, and everything above is a plus.

> Women’s Expert Bikes Prices

However, if you’re looking to train more seriously or even compete, the bare minimum you should spend is $2,000. Everything above that will give you much better components and reduce the weight of your bike.

Still not sure? Check out our article on how much you should spend on a bike!

What Should I Know About Maintenance?

Bike maintenanceBike maintenance for women’s bikes does not differ much from that of men’s bikes. The most important thing is to make sure everything is lubricated and tight.

Buy chain lube and apply it once a week, or every 40mi you ride.

Before you apply a new coat of lube, wipe your chain with a clean cloth, with or without using a degreaser. Buy a chain measuring tool and put a new chain every 500 – 1,500mi, or when it gets too worn out. This will maintain good performance and prevent your cassette and crankset from wearing out prematurely, which is much more expensive to change.

Keep your bike clean by washing it with water and non-abrasive soap, and make sure that your tires are pumped to proper air pressure.

Have in mind that a more expensive bike is more expensive to maintain when you need to change some parts such as the chain, cassette, crankset, brake pads, and so on.

How to Assemble My New Bike?

How To assemble women bikeWhen it comes to assembling, there are three main ways that you can go about this part.

  • Learn How to Do It Yourself. There are many tutorials available online, both written tutorials and videos on YouTube, where you can quickly learn how to do it yourself. All you need are a couple of tools that you can buy for cheap, and you’re ready.
  • Take it to a Local Bike Shop. Your local bike shop can assemble your bike for cheap, so this is the easiest way to do it if you do not want to be bothered much.

  2. Hi Jeff,
I’m looking for a bicycle for my younger sis. But here on your site, all are so expensive. I was looking for one for around 800-900$. Can you suggest me? It’s her birthday gift and her birthday is in the next month. She will be using it to go to school and visiting friends. and if the cycle has a bent rod in the middle that will be much better. If you can please suggest me.

    1. Hi Nick,
You can check this site. You can also get her a refurbished bike for half a price. The important thing is that the components work. A good bike doesn’t have to be brand new.

  3. hello,
i am looking for your advise on purchasing bike.
What do you think about Jamis helix A1vs trek Marlin 6

    1. Hi Lana,
These are all excellent bikes. The only difference is the design. The Jamis is feminine while the Marlin is unisex. As for the ride, the are both good and durable.

    1. Hi Robert,
Thanks for the positive feedback. We want to ensure everyone get’s to ride 😉

  4. Hello, I’m impressed with this arrival. It seems unbiased and quite helpful. I’m 5’8 with long legs. I am looking for a comfortable bike with seat, handlebars and ride. I’m 46 and will be using it for pleasure, some exercise in a park or sidewalk and a LITTLE off road. I can’t seem to find anything worth it out there. Please help me!

    1. Hi Debbie,
Hybrid bikes are the best combination of road and offroad comfort. You fall in the Medium size range. I recommend a 16″ frame size. Go ahead and take a look at the best hybrid bikes today. Let me know if you have other questions.

  5. Great article thank you for writing.

I’m still unsure which bike is for me, so please help. I’m 5’10 and want a comfy bike that I can ride for 20-30 mile rides. I am a beginner but intend to bike for years.

    1. Hi Shelly,
I am glad you intend to choose cycling as part of your lifestyle. You need to decide first which type of bike is for you: Mountain, Road, City Bike, or Hybrid. Each has it’s on pros and cons. For newbies who are going to choose cycling as a form of commute, then city bike style is a good option. You can also get a hybrid for comfort because it can be ridden in road and off-road. But if you choose cycling as a sport, then either go with a road bike or a mountain bike. More here

  6. Hey,

I am an athletic female who is very short at 4ft 7inches tall & in search of a bike that I would fit well! So far no luck… I assume I will have to go with a Youth Bike. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I want to add it to my workouts and eventually get a indoor trainer for it for the long winters here.

    Thanks, Sadie!

    1. Hi Sadie, what do you think about Specialized Sirrus 2.0? It has an XXS frame size that fits riders as short as 4’8″, so it might work for you with or without some minor adjustments. It’s a pretty good deal as well considering the value you get out of it. Hope this helps!

  7. Hey,
I have already a Fuji road bike, but want to get a mountain bike to switch my exercise up on the weekends. I’m a beginner mountain biker and am not looking for down hill, but rather trails with less difficulty.
I looked a the Co-Op Cycles DRT 1.1W that’s suggested here as the best budget bike, but the link brings me to REI, which tells me that they don’t offer this bike anymore :/. Maybe you can suggest a different Co-Op bike that comes with the same bells & whistles?
I also was looking at the Cannondale Trail, but I see that you’re suggesting the Cannondale Tango.
As I’d like to stay under $500 it seems like that Cannondale will be the choice unless REI came out with a replacement for the Co-Op Cycles DRT 1.1W. I will give it some research, but maybe you know the answer already and can help?

Also, can you tell me what frame would fit best to me? Female, 5’5″, 120 lbs, inner leg ~30″ –
    I believe I should go with a S frame or 15″ or 16″.

Great website! Super informative and exactly what I needed to get an idea about what I want.

    1. Hey Maria, I’m glad you like the website. 🙂

Unless DRT 1.1W comes back in stock, you can also check out Trek Marlin 5. It’s just $50 over your budget, but it’s worth it. It’s available as a women-specific model as well. We’re doing a review about it at the moment that should be published in a few days, so you can learn more why I think it’s a good buy. 🙂

But Tango and Trail are good bikes for beginners as well.

As for the size, a 16″ frame would be a great fit for you.

      Have fun!

  8. I love Felt FR30W bike this bike best for women. Its price is too high but it’s perfect or women. It’s fast work and excellent disc brakes

    1. Hey Nick, you’re not alone there. It offers good value for that money and it looks good as well.

  9. Hi,
Just wondering what that bike is in the top photo with the girl. I see it starts with a “T”. Thanks!

  10. Hello Jeff,

I have read your articles and they are are amazing. I have recently started riding 7speed infinity bike and fell in love with cycling. Planning to upgrade. I am looking for something for city trails and forest trails. I live in Columbus, IN and we have hilly trails. Can you please suggest a good bike for on and off road under 500$. I am 5ft1

    1. Thanks, Swati! I’m happy that you found a new passion! 🙂

I recommend checking out Trek Verve 1 or Raleigh Detour 1. We wrote about them in Best Bikes for Commuting, if you want to learn a bit more. They fit your budget and meet your requirements as well. 🙂

You can take a look at our recommendation for the Best Hybrid Bikes, we included some cheap models that also meet your requirements.

  11. Hello!
This was an awesome article! I am a runner, but am looking for a bike to mix up my workouts. I am looking for a bike that I could ride in Pittsburgh, both on the streets and in parks with hilly dirt trails. I am about 5’9″ and 26 years old. I would love to start commuting on a bike, but use it for mountain biking as well, so not sure if there is a good bike that works well for both!
Thanks so much for all of the insight!

    1. Hi Madeline, I think you should consider getting a gravel bike. They’re getting increasingly popular nowadays for those exact reasons — they’re good for both on- and off-road riding, and they can handle commuting and touring as well. Diamondback Haannjen is a good example of what I mean. 🙂

  12. I am looking for a nice riding bike to the beach and home which is approx 6 miles one way and also a bike to ride for exercise and to hunt calories. Wha twirls
You suggest for a 65 year old lady? What brand name?

    1. Hi Sharon, Sixthreezero is a good, cheap, and comfortable choice you could look into. Happy riding! 🙂

  13. Great read for someone that knows nothing!!
I haven’t been on a bike in decades, so for me it’s hard to even understand these categories. I certainly know I’m not planning on tackling trails, or even city streets, but I’m not looking for the cruiser that I can take my basket to the beach.
At 38,I’m 6’1 with degenerating arthritis that is eroding my SI joints. Biking is one of my limited fitness options left. I know I’m looking for an upright sitting position, and comfort!! Hoping to hit paved trails and ride with the family. Been to a bike shop and sat on some great, what they called, ‘Soft rollers’. I’d like to stay below the $500 mark, but curious if you could include any recommendations for comfort?

    1. Hi Jeannette,

The best choice for you would be a city bike or a hybrid bike. They will put you in a more upright position and you can ride on different surfaces and different terrain. Get a model with wider tires and front suspension for even more comfort. 🙂

  14. I’m looking for a bike to attach baby seat on it. I will be using it around the city but would also like to use it on gravel trails.

    1. Hi Gezelle,
I believe any flat-bar hybrid bike with slightly wider tires (>38mm) would be a good choice for you. The exact model depends on your budget and your other preferences. Hope this helps. 🙂

  15. I am looking for a bike I will love as I have had many that I didn’t love. This guide was very helpful to me.

  16. Great lessons here, for a person who has been off a bike for years!

I’m 5ft7. Need a good bike in city.
